Dragon boaters off to Tassie

Fresh from another medal haul at the NSW State Championships last weekend, the Orana Dragon Boat Club is finalising arrangements for their upcoming tour of Tasmania.

President Graeme Board is back on deck (but not in the paddling seat, just yet, after an altercation with a cardiac surgeon’s scalpel and leading a troupe of 41 to the Apple Isle. The Outback Dragons snared two bronze medals at the State Regatta at Penrith but are treating the 4 Bridges event as a fun time “with a bit of a competitive edge”!

Two crews of 16 will paddle on the pristine waters of the southern isle, sweeping up the Derwent like the Sydney-Hobart giants for an amazing party at the Constitution Dock.

Bathurst and Orange crews will also participate.

Rhonda Betts says organisers have pointed out the non-competitive nature of the event.

“There are 10 boats in total and organisers keep emphasising it is not a race. We need to finish together. It will be interesting to see if our competitive edge gets the better of us as the finish line nears,” Rhonda laughed.

“It’s lucky they’re not a boat full of rugby boys!”
