“On your blocks… bang… splash!

Mirabelle Shanks gives a nervous wave before the starter blasts her into the pool. Minutes later the fledgling “Dolphin” touches the wall after a courageous 50 metres freestyle at the St Pius X carnival. The shrill of the whistle calls swimmers to the blocks, anxious faces stare at the water, a puff of smoke precedes by milliseconds the ear-piercing crack of the starter’s gun and then eight cherubs using a variety of styles enter the water.

It’s the true sound of summer, the annual school carnival where smooth-stroking aficionados and “happy slappers” alike share the Aquatic Centre lanes in a frantic “get-to-the-other-end-at-all-costs” attempt to accumulate personal or House points.

Nic Wilson and his staff have been smiling for weeks as local schools file into the pool in their respective House colours. Some replete in retro all-in-one suits, others in braces and top hats and a multitude of fuzzy coloured wigs, shirts; all of them holding up posters, mascots and chant sheets!

We’ve all been there!

As well as the school carnivals, in recent weeks we’ve seen the Swimtech meet and last weekend, the Western Area Championships.

We live in the greatest country and are blessed with amazing summers so what better place to be than at the pool singing to your heart’s content in quest of an elusive “Holy Grail” award for your team.
