Flying rodeo clown

Weekender photographer Steve Cowley was fence-side for all the action of Coonamble’s famed Rodeo and Campdraft held over the long weekend.

The undisputed heroes of the bone-jarring, adrenaline-pumping sport of bull riding are the “protection clowns”, who throw themselves in the path of tonnes of rampaging animal to ensure the safety of not only the cowboys but the bulls themselves.

This “clown” was on the not-so-funny end of the ride on this occasion, but all three - cowboy, beast and clown - made it back to the chutes safely, accompanied by the roar of an appreciative crowd.
