Former Dubbo photographer and inaugural winner of the Macquarie Photography Prize, Luke Peterson, took this shot at Devil’s Marbles – a spectacular rock formation in the Northern Territory – while on a mid-winter camping expedition.
Luke says it was the middle of the night, and “absolutely freezing” but the crisp, cold desert air made for an equally crisp and clear photograph of the magnificent starry night.
“Just being out there and seeing those skies that are so clear is a rarity,” says Luke. “There are good skies around Coona and Dubbo, but out there, they’re unbelievably clear.”
