Head teachers at most high schools have to mix in-class teaching ability and staff management, with high-level administration skills.

Recently-announced as an Excellence Awardee in the "Department Head of the Year" category of the Australian Education Awards, Dubbo College South Campus’ Head Teacher English, Lauren Ward, possesses all three attributes.

But most of all, Lauren — a country girl herself — is committed to teaching young people.

“I’m passionate about equity of opportunity. I grew-up in the bush, was educated in regional NSW and I was lucky," she said.

"I had a lot of opportunities to strive and thrive, I think every student in regional and rural Australia needs that,” she added.

Lauren considers strong relationships between teachers, students, and their families as an essential foundation for student success and self-belief.

“It’s important to cultivate those relationships and unlock self-belief within students so they can aspire to be who they want to be and do what they want to do,” Lauren said.

“If a student believes in themselves, they are going to make an impact,” she added.

Lauren commenced her teaching career at South Campus in 2000 on practicum placement under Mr Thomas Carr, who was at the time an English/Drama teacher.

“He mentored me. He’s still my mentor," Lauren said.

“Anything I’ve done with Tom has been invigorating, inspiring and amazing because that’s the man he is and without him I wouldn’t find as much joy in the job.”

School Principal Jessica Schulte added that she was fortunate to have teachers of such calibre on her campus.

“Lauren Ward is an outstanding Head Teacher with consistent high expectations of her students and herself which is evident in everything she does,” Miss Schulte said.

“We are incredibly proud and congratulate Lauren on her achievements, innovation and leadership,” she added.

The awards recognise achievements of outstanding schools and staff across 28 categories.

The Excellence Awardees as announced are part of the biggest showcase of excellence in the regions for teachers of K-12 education. The Australian Education Award winners will be revealed and celebrated at the awards in mid-August in Sydney.
