Families in the central west are in for a treat next month when the highly acclaimed stage show featuring Australia’s most lovable Blue Heeler family visits Dubbo.

Dubbo is just one stop on the wider regional tour of “Bluey’s Big Play The Stage Show”, which kicked off in Sydney in June and will wrap up in Hobart in early October.

The show inspired by the Logie, BAFTA, Emmy, ARIA and AACTA-award winning children’s television program has just finished touring regional Victorian communities and is heading into South Australia, after which it will start its run of regional NSW communities later this month.

Bluey, Bingo, Mum and Dad will roll into Dubbo for Wackadoo performances at the Dubbo Regional Theatre and Convention Centre on September 4, 5 and 6.

Since premiering in Australia in 2020, Bluey’s Big Play The Stage Show has toured globally, with more than two million people enjoying the show in the UK, Ireland, Canada, the US, Europe, Singapore, South Africa and the UAE.

If you don’t know much about the stage show, directed by Rosemary Myers of Windmill Theatre Company and presented by BBC Studios and Andrew Kay in association with Windmill Theatre Co, it features larger-than-life puppets commanded by a talented cast who enact the original story by Bluey creator Joe Brumm.

“When Dad feels like a little bit of afternoon time out, Bluey and Bingo have other plans!” organisers told Dubbo Photo News.

“Join them as they pull out all of the games and cleverness at their disposal to get Dad off that bean bag.”

Bluey’s Big Play The Stage Show features original voices from the TV sensation, including the instantly recognisable voices of Melanie Zanetti as Mum and David McCormack as Dad, and music by Bluey composer Joff Bush.

The show also has a local link to our region, with Jacob Williams, the show’s Director of Puppetry who has toured the world with the production, revealing he was actually born in Dubbo.

“We moved to Newcastle shortly after, so I think I spent the first six months of my life in Dubbo,” he said.

The renowned puppeteer, a graduate of the Victorian College of the Arts and co-artistic director of Lemony S Puppet Theatre, is excited about bringing Bluey to Dubbo.

“It's been so great to come back to Australia after being away for like four years and just seeing how much the show is beloved back home,” Jacob said.

While he didn’t construct the puppets, Jacob helped in the design process.

“I was certainly part of the development process, consulting on the mechanisms, the weights and looking at how we could make them work,” he explained.

Jacob also works with the puppeteer casts engaged in each country to perform the show. The performers need to learn how to manage the oversized puppets in what is a very physical show.

“We don't rush the rehearsal process. It gives the performers time to build up stamina for the performance,” he said.

“They’re never holding the puppets up [in the show] as much as they do during rehearsals. So when it comes to show time, they can manage the show a lot more easily physically.”

Twelve people are cast for the show in each country, and two puppeteers are on each puppet, rotating through the roles.
