Motorists across NSW are reminded to slow down and remain vigilant with 40km/h school zones back in effect from Monday, April 28, as students return for Term 2.
School zone speed limits generally operate from 8am to 9.30am and from 2.3 pm to 4pm on school days. Clear signage at the start of each zone states the times that zone is in effect.
Although some schools will hold teacher development days on Monday, many students will still attend.
Transport for NSW Executive Director of Transport Safety, Chadi Chalhoub, emphasised the importance of observing speed limits near schools.
“We want children to go to school and return home safely, so please follow the speed limit in school zones and watch out for children when they are crossing, waiting to cross or getting on or off buses," Mr Chalhoub said.
He warned drivers who disregard road rules near schools would face higher penalties and potential licence suspension.
Parents and guardians were also encouraged to teach children road safety principles, reminding them to “Stop! Look! Listen! Think!” when crossing roads.
The NSW Government’s School Crossing Supervisor program continues statewide, employing supervisors to ensure infant and primary school students safely cross roads near schools.
