There’s nothing quite like a group of citizen singers belting out some much-loved favourites in harmony for the joy of music, which is exactly what’s being offered in Wellington next week.
Lovers of choral ensembles are being invited to come along and hear the second-ever performance by the home-grown “Stray Notes” Choir, made up of members of the town’s creative cooperative.
The show on next Sunday is part of the group’s ever-increasing cultural footprint in the community, President Emily Falson, explained.
“The singers are all members of Wellington Arts and are a part of our intention of expanding into other artistic areas,” Emily revealed.
“So we’re very proudly putting on our second show… we also did one last year in the gallery, our first,” she added.
This year’s performance, she revealed, is on Sunday, December 7, from 2pm at the St John the Baptist Church at 43 Warne Street.
Although this is only their second show, Stray Notes are not just in it for the fun but are taking their craft very seriously, Emily said.
“The beautiful thing is they’ve been having a lot of development and honing their craft. The members catch up each week, and they’ve been working on every section of the choir: soprano, alto, and bass,” she enthused.
“They’ve gotten really very good under the special leadership of choir master, Lindy Blekemore.”
The near 40-member ensemble have been rehearsing their upcoming performance for months.
“It’s an amazing repertoire of African songs, Christmas carols, old favourites, with something for everyone.
“They are also being accompanied by top pianist, Dionne Mitchell… tickets are only $10, and concertgoers also get an afternoon tea,” Emily said.
The choir, she emphasised, are now much more than just a sing-and-giggle community chorus.
“They’re going from strength to strength and are now a really good regional choir,” Emily said.
“Everyone is invited to attend, it should be a really good show,” she concluded.
Tickets for the performance are available from 123Tix.
