The Nyngan and District War Memorial will undergo much-needed restoration thanks to a $9988 grant from the state government’s Community War Memorials Fund.
Announced as part of Round 2 of the 2024/25 funding program, the grant will support Bogan Shire Council and the local RSL sub-Branch in repairing the historic cenotaph, which was first unveiled in July 1937 to commemorate those from the district who served in the First World War.
“Thanks to the NSW Government for this funding. The Nyngan Cenotaph is an important reminder of the service that local people gave to Australia and is a focal point for our Anzac Day services,” said Derek Francis, President of the Nyngan RSL sub-Branch.
“I often observe individuals standing in silent contemplation at the Cenotaph during the course of the year.”
Bogan Shire Council’s Debb Wood, Director of People and Community Services, welcomed the funding, noting the memorial’s deterioration over time due to weather exposure.
“This funding will allow us to bring it back to a standard fit for purpose,” she said.
The Nyngan project is one of 14 receiving a share of $134,636 in this round. Other funded sites include Ivanhoe, Gunnedah, Wagga Wagga, and the HMAS Assault Memorial at Port Stephens.
Applications for the 2025/26 Community War Memorials Fund, now offering up to $15,000 per project, close at 11pm on Wednesday, June 25. More information is available at veterans.nsw.gov.au.
