Like many non-profits, regional children’s charity Country Hope relies on the tremendous support of volunteers to be able to run activities like their popular annual camps.

The next six-day Country Hope Camp – held exclusively for country children diagnosed with cancer or other life-threatening illnesses and their siblings – will be held in the September school holidays at Borambola Sport and Recreation Centre near Wagga Wagga.

Running from Sunday, September 27, to Friday, October 2, the camp will provide a rare opportunity for children to connect with others who understand their journey, try new things and enjoy a week filled with friendship and fun.

Country Hope would like to see more adult men step forward and take on the role of “Camp Buddy” for this year’s camp, as there is a real need for more male volunteers in this program.

Buddies are paired one-on-one with a child, providing friendship, encouragement and support every step of the way over the course of the camp, helping young boys and teenage Country Hope Campers create memories, build confidence and experience the joy of simply being kids.

“Being a Camp Buddy doesn’t require special qualifications or experience,” Country Hope Chief Executive Officer Jo Esler said.

“It’s about being a kind, positive and reliable person who is willing to show up for a child and make their Camp experience something truly special.”

Full training and support is provided, ensuring volunteers feel prepared and confident in their role.

Ms Esler said the impact of a caring male role model can be incredibly meaningful for young boys and teenagers attending Camp.

“Every child deserves someone in their corner, someone who believes in them, encourages them and helps them discover what they’re capable of,” she explained.

“As a long-time Camp Buddy myself, I have seen firsthand how powerful these relationships can be. You see children arrive feeling nervous or unsure, but throughout the week they grow in confidence, form friendships and rediscover the simple joy of being kids.”
