What can you tell us about yourself? I am Sofy Shrestha, a Kathmandu girl who moved to Australia at the end of 2018. I completed a Master’s in Professional Accounting back in Sydney before changing my career and following my passion for teaching. I am now an early childhood teacher in Dubbo; I graduated in 2024 and am working in a job I love. I am a simple person who loves keeping a small circle of friends, although I’m friendly with just about everyone – from little ones to grandparents! If I connect with you, chances are you are stuck with me for a very long time.
What’s the best way to start the day? With hot lemon and honey, followed by a very serious breakfast – smashed avocado, eggs, sausages, mushrooms, corn and bread. And if I am feeling extra fancy, a hot chocolate! Basically, breakfast is my love language.
What’s the best day on the calendar? Saturday and Sunday – because I don’t have to work! It’s my time to relax, worship, pamper myself, cook something new, post it on Instagram, get my nails done, enjoy a massage or therapy session, visit the library, grab bubble tea and finish with a little window shopping.
How different was your life one year ago? Very different. Last year was a challenging one as I dealt with some serious health issues and pain. But I never lost hope. I am still here, still smiling and still doing my best – and that’s something I am proud of and I’m still in the process of recovery.
What’s the farthest you’ve ever been from home? Australia! I came here from Kathmandu in 2018 and, nearly eight years later, I can honestly call Australia my second home. I studied, worked hard, completed university and found a career I love. I am very proud of how far I have come, not the biggest achievement though, but I would say it’s self-satisfaction.
Where is the most interesting place you’ve been? Dalpura! It was supposed to be a fun little adventure but turned into a full-blown survival expedition. There were no signposts, we got lost, walked for about four or five hours and experienced sunshine, rain and hail all in one day! After climbing up and down slippery paths, we finally reached an underground waterfall and swimming spot. Exhausting, risky and absolutely unforgettable!
What are you most likely to become famous for? Cooking! I genuinely love turning random ingredients into something delicious. Trying a new recipe and tasting the final result is one of my favourite feelings. Give me a kitchen and a few ingredients and I’ll see what happens!
What people have you appreciated in your life? I have a few special people who have always stood beside me through my ups and downs. I won’t reveal their names – some secrets are meant to stay secrets!
How do you relax after a hard day? A warm shower, herbal tea, calming music and a good chat with my partner or someone close to me. I also love stretching and breathing exercises. Sometimes, a little quiet time is all you need to reset.
What pets did you have while you were growing up? Dogs – lots of dogs! I have had some very special ones over the years, including Snowy, my first dog, whom I sadly lost to food poisoning. I also had a German Shepherd who is my daughter (child). She’s 14 now – not a child anymore, a pug named Arrow, a Dalmatian, a Cocker Spaniel and a Doberman who I lost back home when he went out for a walk. I still have two dogs back home in Nepal and rest of them are with my close ones. They are all well. I have always treated my dogs like family – actually, calling them “pets” feels a little insulting. They were and are my children!
Where would you spend all your time if you could? Probably somewhere peaceful with good food, a beautiful kitchen, a glass of sparkling wine, my family nearby and plenty of time to cook, watch horror movies. explore, relax and enjoy the little things. And yes… there would definitely be bubble tea involved!
