Police are urging motorists to make smart choices this Anzac Day long weekend, warning that one bad decision behind the wheel could change lives forever.
NSW Police have launched Operation ANZAC Day 2025, a high-visibility traffic campaign with double demerit points now in effect until Sunday, April 27. The operation comes amid growing concern after three people died on NSW roads over Easter, bringing the state’s road toll to 107 so far this year – up from 106 at the same time last year.
Minister for Police and Counter-terrorism Yasmin Catley issued a strong reminder to road users.
“If you’re thinking about speeding, texting while driving, or getting behind the wheel after a few drinks – think again,” she said. “It’s not worth your life, or the life of someone else.”
Police from across specialist commands, including PolAir, the Mounted Unit and Highway Patrol, will be deployed across the state, with a focus on speeding, drink and drug driving, distraction, and seatbelt compliance.
Traffic and Highway Patrol Commander, Assistant Commissioner David Driver, said police are especially concerned about drivers impaired by drugs and alcohol.
“During the Easter Long Weekend Operation, 1 in 10 drivers who were subject to random drug testing tested positive,” he said. “Any presence of illegal drugs detected is not acceptable.”
Motorists are also warned about the dangers of distraction, especially mobile phone use, and reminded that even slight speeding reduces reaction time and increases crash severity.
