The Narromine Historical Society building in Burraway Street will gain a new lease on life – literally! – when the Narromine Car Club permanently moves into the site this month.
Approved for a two-year lease by Narromine Shire Council at its most recent meeting on March 11, the building will become the new home of the growing car club which has 105 members, club president Kym Edmunds told Dubbo Photo News.
"We're going to be doing it up, and it's going to be our clubhouse," she said.
Last used several years ago as an historical museum, the building at 35 Burraway Street is located in between the police station and the council-owned historic round Hub 'n Spoke building. The prime Burraway Street location, which also doubles as the Mitchell Highway, is also perfect to host the club's monthly Cars and Coffee, which is normally held further down the same street.
Finding a space they could call their own was important to the club, which had previously met at locations like the golf club, Kym said.
"Because there's so many members, and we're doing so much for the community, we just thought we'd like to have our own club house," she explained.
Narromine Shire Council identified some prospective properties for consideration, and the club applied to council to lease the Burraway Street property.
Under the proposal agreed to by council, the property is being leased on an ‘as is’ basis, with the Narromine Car Club responsible for any maintenance and improvements to the property, as well as utilities and services connected to the premises including water usage.
The club realises there is a lot of work to be done, including installing toilet facilities, but they're happy to do it and they have lots of members keen to help, Kym said.
Gaining a place to call home is another big win for the hardworking club, which raises thousands of dollars annually for the local community. Days after council approved the club's application to lease the Burraway Street property, the club held its major annual fundraising event – the Show 'n Shine 'n Swap Meet – at the golf club on Sunday, March 15. They are also looking forward to holding their first Cars and Coffee event right outside the clubhouse front doors in the near future.
"It's a new beginning for [the building] and a new chapter for our club," Kym concluded.
