Volunteer groups in bush towns have all struggled with membership since the pandemic, with good news on that front for one of Wellington’s most selfless clubs.
Wellington Lions were pleased to recently welcome new member Smih Biplob who also received his very own name badge.
“You don’t have to be very active to help,” a club spokesperson said of the local service group.
“Just someone interested in helping the community and interested in attending meetings, as a secretary or treasurer!” they added.
Club meetings are on the second and fourth Mondays of the month in the Private Room at the Wellington Soldiers Memorial Club.
For those interested, some of their continuing fundraisers include a Pre-Loved Book Fair every Thursday to Saturday from 10am–2pm in the Western Gallery opposite Cameron Park in Wellington.
This involves thousands of books that have been donated from locals and Wellington Lions’ sister club of Kellyville, in Sydney, which has a wide choice of books to choose from.
Most editions only cost a gold coin, and all are sorted by genre for non-fiction, and alphabetically by author for fiction works.
There are even a couple of bookcases of “vintage” works and “specials” with all money raised going to local causes to the tune of about $18,000 last financial year alone.
For the next few months, all money will be going to fight against kids cancer via the Australian Lions Childhood Cancer Research Foundation.
