Red hats for fun and friendship

The Red Hat Society is a unique women’s group that began in America in 1998, inspired by a 50-something birthday party and a poem that encourages women to age with a sense of humour.

In a moment of fun and in the search for the perfect present for a friend, Sue Ellen Cooper bought a red hat as her gift. Not long after, a group of red hat-wearing ladies started getting together on a regular basis to promote their passion for fun, friendship, fitness, the freedom to express themselves in positive ways, and a dedication to the fulfilment of lifelong dreams.

Members of the Red Hat Society – who call the group a ‘dis-organisation’ – are instantly recognisable with their purple outfits, red hats and accessories, inspired by the poem ‘Warning’ by Jenny Joseph which includes these lines.

“When I am an old woman, I shall wear purple,

“With a red hat which doesn’t go, And doesn’t suit me.

“On brandy and summer gloves, And satin sandals.

“And say I have no money for butter.”

In the 25-plus years since, the society has amassed 35,000 members worldwide, including in Australia where there are more than 30 ‘chapters’. One of those chapters is here in Dubbo.

The Dubbo Chapter of the Red Hat Society meets each Monday for lunch and fun with a monthly birthday get-together. The group delights in having no rules, and most importantly having fun!
