When JAWS was released in cinemas in 1975, it terrified a generation of cinema-goers, made a lot of swimmers wary of the ocean, and, sadly, led to overfishing of shark populations. Based on the novel by Peter Benchley, who also had a small cameo as a TV reporter in the film, it was the original "shark movie" that sparked a long fascination within Hollywood to continue the genre.
