A strong easterly wind didn’t deter 36 committed bowlers from returning to Sporties after last week’s wash out for their weekly dose of RSL Combination Bowls.
A maximum score of nine on the sixth end helped the team of Matt Quill, Ruby Stockings and Chris Sinclair claim first place. They beat Trish Gosper, John Kennedy and Ron McCauley 26 to 8.
Close behind in second spot was the team of Leo Balstad, Frank Armstrong and Pete Sinclair who beat Kerry Dickson, Eric Satchell and Brian Jones 27 to 12. With both first and second place winners being level on ends, 11-5, it was only a margin of three that split them.
Third place went to the father and son team of Michael and Ray Strawhan, who played with Dick Whitford, and were too strong for Graham Ross, Terese Gaio and Rachael Karanga. Although Graham’s team outscored the opposition in the second half, the margin was too big. Final score was 28-17.
It was great to see Sue Armstrong back at Sunday bowls. Sue combined with Gordon Lummis and Bryan O’Sullivan, however, they were unlucky to be beaten by Maurice Wallace and the experienced Mel Giddings and Gordon Scott, 20-11.
The last two games were a lot closer with the losing teams in both games winning number of ends but not overall score. In a low scoring affair Mary Perry, John Zeb and Phil Knight beat Ros Joseph, Garry Huggins and Ricky See 13 to 10. Steve Kelly, Rob Pfeiffer and Tim Moore played Paul ‘the phantom’ Goodstat, Shirley Marchant and Tracey Keenan. With only 1 in it at the half way mark and level scores at the 12th and 14th ends, Steves team was lucky to win by 2, 15 to 13.
Leo Balstad and Rob Pfeiffer won their battles with the gusty wind and were credited with resters, whilst lucky numbers went to Tim Moore, Steve Kelly and Trish Gosper.
All bowlers are reminded to save the date; our Christmas party is on December 5 this year. As always, new and casual players are most welcome and if you are interested but worried about what to do, give it a try as you will be teamed with friendly, experienced committee members.
Our club contact details can be found under Sunday in the Dubbo Photo News Community Diary.
