The annual Veterans’ golf tournament was played last Thursday, August 6, at the Narromine course, which was in excellent condition.

A field of 45 players lined up for this event – 6 ladies and 39 gents – representing 15 clubs from throughout the state including Dubbo, Trangie, Gilgandra, Cobar, Dunedoo, Trundle, Warren, Wellington, Nyngan, Tottenham, Gulgong, Singleton, Yeoval, Coonabarabran and Narromine.

Under the new format, introduced by NSWVGA, this event is now a handicap event over 18 holes for women and men.

The overall winner this year was Maree Townsend of Gilgandra, with a score of 41 Stableford points. Well done, Maree.

The Division 1 winner was Garry Martin (Dubbo) with 40 points from Ric Smith (Tottenham) on 39 points. The Division 2 winner was Martin Cross (Gilgandra) on 39 points fromm "China" Brien (Cobar) with 38 points. The straightest drive went to Bob Dwyer (Gilgandra) while the Nearest the Pin winners were Michael Beetson (Nyngan) and Sue Ellen Taylor (Trundle).

Narromine Veterans Club president, Peter “Hutcho” Hutchinson, speaking at the trophy presentation, welcomed all the players for attending and prior to announcing the winners, thanked them for making the day a success.

He also expressed appreciation to the Narromine Ladies, who took the entries early and later recorded the cards to determine the winners, as well as handling the catering for lunch and afternoon snacks enjoyed by all.

He also acknowledged Peter Gainsford and his helpers for preparing the course in top condition for the day; Greg Kearines who was in charge of allocating the loan golf carts for the visitors; and to bar staff member Erica, who handled the thirsts of the players.

Neil Gowdie, president, and Ashley Bullock from WDVGA, were welcomed, assisting with the photos and presentation of trophies for the winners.

Mr Gowdie spoke of the success of the annual western district tournaments and also the new venture of an overall winner of the year in attending local tournaments.
