Dubbo Cycle Club celebrated an outstanding weekend of junior racing last month when it hosted the 2026 AusCycling Junior State Championship at Dubbo Regional Cycling Facilities Velodrome.
Young riders from across NSW spanning age groups from Under 11s to Under 13s, converged on the track for two days of spirited competition across the weekend in three events: the Individual Time Trial, and Scratch Race on Saturday, followed by Sunday’s Sprint Derbies.
Riders battled particularly challenging conditions, with strong headwinds persisting throughout both days, testing both stamina and skill, Club President, Harry Pickering, revealed.
“The club is incredibly proud of our juniors, highlighted the commitment and development of skills, many of whom have been training consistently in the lead‑up to the championship,” Harry said.
Among notable performers, was Ellie Carlow, a recent graduate of the club’s Tiny Tots program up to the Under 9 Girls. She made her State Championship debut with confidence and determination, with her growing skill-set on full display as she delivered an impressive performance, earning silver in all three events.
Other achievers were in the Under 11 Boys, Hudson O’Brien and Denis Kanu, and for the girls , Mackenzie O’Brien who represented Dubbo with enthusiasm, proudly wearing the club’s green jersey. Mackenzie showed tremendous courage competing in her first year of racing .
Denis, meanwhile, demonstrated strong resilience, pushing hard through every finish, while Hudson converted months of training into podium success in securing bronze medals across all three events; a significant achievement as he builds toward his second year of state‑level competition.
The more-experienced Under 13 boys consisting of Reggie Berryman, Tommy Tanswell, and Louis J Kanu, also participated as first‑year riders, all three gaining invaluable experience that will bolster their return in 2027.
The championship concluded with the presentation of the prestigious Jackson Pascoe Memorial Trophy, an honour awarded to the rider who accumulates the most points across all events.
This year’s recipient was Chloe Jackson of the Castlemaine Cycle Club, who delivered consistently strong performances throughout the weekend.
The award carries deep meaning for the NSW junior cycling community. It commemorates Jackson Pascoe, a young Dubbo cyclist who tragically lost his life in 2006. Today, the trophy stands as one of the highest honours in NSW Junior Track Cycling, symbolising excellence, determination, and the enduring spirit of the sport.
The Dubbo Cycle Club expressed heartfelt pride in all participating riders and gratitude to volunteers, families, and supporters who contributed to the success of the event.
Despite tough weather and intense competition, the club’s juniors showcased resilience, sportsmanship, and impressive progression, hallmarks of a strong future for cycling in the region.
