Beautiful sunshine enticed 45 happy bowlers to the greens this week for their dose of RSL Combination Bowls. Top spot went to the team of Gordon Scott, Eric Satchell and Ray Strawhan, who scored 22 in the second half to convincingly beat Maurice Wallace, Gai Teale and Graham Ross, 31-10. They also won 10 ends to six.
Second place was a pairs game with Alan Andriske and Terese Gaio playing Trish Gosper and Bryan O’Sullivan. The scores were level after the ninth end but Terese and Alan proved too strong in the end, winning 23-12.
With Chris Sinclair acting as swinger and more discussions of various fudge flavours, Mick Strawhan and Chris Strongy beat John Kennedy and John Zeb, 19-9 to take third place.
Not far behind was the team of Steve Kelly, Steve Evans and Ron McCauley, who beat Ricky See, Jenni Spratt and Kerri Dickson 20-11. An impressive ‘6’ on the 13th end helped to consolidate the win.
The experience of Mary Perry as a lead made a big difference in her team’s win over Tim Moore, Ros Joseph and Mel Giddings. Mary partnered with Shirley Marchant and Rob Pfeiffer and the final score was 18-13.
Sue Armstrong returned to the winning side of the card this week helping Greg Brown and Matt Quill to beat Ken Whittaker, Merv Teale and Brian Jones, 17-13. Brian’s team outscored the opposition in the second half, but the lead was too much.
The last two games were very close and both decided by a single shot. The scores were level at the 14th end between Sue McCauley, Gordon Lummis and Col Cottee against Julie Brown (welcome back Julie), Frank Armstrong and Mike Twohill, before Mike’s team went on to win 14-13 and nine ends to seven.
It was a game of two distinct halves for The Phantom, Paul Goodstat, playing against Pete Sinclair. Paul played with Ron Wiegold and Helen Emblem and they had a lead of 10 at the half way mark. Pete rallied his team of Lucky Leo Balstad and Vicki Humell and they all stepped up, but were unlucky to go down by one, 15-16.
Congratulations to Helen Emblem who scored the only rester this week. Lucky numbers went to Merv Teale, Helen Emblem and Steve Evans.
As always, new and casual players are most welcome, and if you are interested but worried about what to do, give it a try as you will be teamed with friendly, experienced committee members.
