Dubbo Regional Council invites primary schools and early childhood services to participate in their waste and sustainability programs.
The DRC have two programs operating: ‘Get Grabby’ is a program designed for early childhood and is currently available online. Resource Recovery Education Officer Hamish Campbell is also eager to communicate with services in the local area to discuss their sustainability approaches. The second program is aimed at students from kindergarten to Year 6 at primary schools within the local government area.
The program takes place in Terms 3 and 4 and has been running since 2022. WIth 1575 children currently registered for the workshops in 2024, Hamish is encouraging more schools to take part. “Kids are the future, and this program assists the students to be proactive in issues involving littering, recycling and food wastage,” Hamish shares with Dubbo Photo News.
The primary school sessions are interactive, fun and engaging, and run for 30-45 minutes. “It is important to understand that up to 60 per cent of the red-lid bin waste could be diverted away from landfill. We want to impart a broader understanding of sustainability and inspire the future generation to educate their community about waste, food and garden organics.”
